Weeping Water School recently purchased Apple laptop computers for all students in the junior and senior class for the remainder of the year. The program is called the One-to-One program, one laptop computer for every student. The One-to-One program has been around for about ten years, but Weeping Water is only the twenty-second school in the state of Nebraska to purchase laptops for students. Many staff members from Weeping Water visited Westside Public Schools in Omaha. The staff observed and talked to the staff and students about the One-to-One program. After visiting Westside, the staff members were very enthusiastic about the One-to-One program and decided it would be a great addition to our school system.

The computers were paid for by grants that the district has written and been rewarded. No district tax dollars were used to pay for the computers. On February 3, all juniors and seniors and their parents wishing to participate in the program attended a short informational meeting about the rules and regulations with the laptops and also receive their computers. Each student only had to pay a small fee of $15.00 to go towards a joint fund to help pay for accidental damages to the laptops. If the laptops were intentionally damaged the students would be responsible for the payment for all repairs.

Most students are ecstatic about the opportunity the computers are giving them. With this program all students, no matter what their family has financially, will have access to the same technology. The laptops will be turned in at the end of the school year and next year all high school students will receive laptops. Almost every class I am involved in has used the computers as a learning tool for the students at least once. The One-to-One program is a wonderful opportunity for our school.
