Save Your Skin from Sun Damage

Q: Why is the sun so bad for my skin?
A: The sun’s rays, which are called ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB), damage your skin. This leads to early wrinkles, skin cancer, and various other skin problems.
Being in the sun over time can lead to skin cancer. A tan is the body’s desperate attempt to protect itself from the sun’s harmful rays.
Q: Where is skin cancer most likely to occur?

A: Skin cancer mostly occurs on parts of the body that are repeatedly exposed to the sun, such as the head, neck, face, tips of ears, hands, forearms, and shoulders.
Q: What are the risk factors of skin cancer?
A: There are numerous things that can put a person more at risk for skin cancer. These risks include:

  • Having fair skin, red or blonde hair.
  • Having light colored eyes.
  • Sunburning easily.
  • Having many moles, freckles, or birthmarks.
  • Working or playing outside.
  • Being in the sun a lot as a child.
  • Having multiple serious sunburns.
  • Family history of skin cancer.
  • Tanning in the sun or with a sunlamp.

Q: How can I prevent skin cancer?
A: The most important thing to remember is to avoid being in the sun or using sunlamps. If you are going to be in the sun for any length of time, wear clothes made from tight-woven cloth so the sun’s rays can’t get to your skin. Also stay in the shade when you can. Consider wearing a wide-brimmed hat to protect your face, neck, and ears.
Tips on preventing skin cancer:

  • Avoid the sun, especially between the hours of 11:00 am and 3:00 pm, when the sun’s rays are the strongest.
  • Don’t use tanning booths or sunlamps.
  • Wear protective clothing and hats.
  • Check your skin yourself every month for signs of skin cancer.
  • If you see an area on your skin that looks unusual, ask your doctor about it.

Q: Should I use sunscreen?
A: If you can’t protect yourself by staying out of the sun or wearing the right kind of clothing, be sure to use sunscreen to help protect you.
Q: How should sunscreen be used?
A: Use sunscreen with an SPF 15 or more. Put the sunscreen everywhere the sun’s rays might touch you, including your ears, back of your neck, and bald areas of your scalp. Continuously apply the sunscreen at least once every hour out in the sun.

Dance Recital

Many young area dancers have been receiving dance classes from Amanda Flanagan, an experienced college student, who has graciously been giving her time back to the community to teach young, eager girls how to dance. The classes are mainly focused on tap and ballet dancing and classes are offered from 3 yrs to Junior High. Every year all of Amanda’s dancers have a recital to show off all that they have learned. The date for this year’s annual recital is Saturday, June 2nd at 2:00 pm in the Weeping Water School Auditorium. A short reception will task place in the multipurpose room of the school after the recital. Please come and support all of the hard work these young girls have done. Hope to see you there!
